■ Scheepjes Sweet Treat (100% cotton, 25g/140m) 1 ball of each: Deep Ocean Green (391) Dark Teal (401)

■ A 1.25mm (US 12 steel) hook

■ 2 safety eyes, 2mm

■ A pipe cleaner

■ A stitch marker

Size down your amigurmi with this dinky critter hooked in lace-weight yarn. It makes a great gift for fantasy-obsessed friends!

NOTES

Parts of this pattern are worked using the amigurumi method. Work stitches continuously in a spiral without closing off each round with a slip stitch. It may help to use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round, moving it up as you work.

If you are making this as a toy for a child under 36 months, do not use safety eyes; instead, embroider eyes using black stranded cotton.

SEA SERPENT HEAD, BODY AND TAIL

Using Deep Ocean Green, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), 6dc in loop. [6 sts] Round 2 (RS) (1dc, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [9 sts] Round 3 Dc in each st around.

Round 4 (2dc, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [12 sts] Round 5 (3dc, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [15 sts] Round 6 (4dc, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [18 sts] Insert safety eyes between Rounds 4-5, approx 5 sts apart.

Round 7 *(Ss, ch1, htr, ch2, htr, ch1, ss) in fl of next st, ss in fl of next 2 sts; rep from * once more, (ss, ch1, htr, ch2, htr, ch1, ss) in fl of next st,
**1dc, (dc2tog) twice; rep from ** once more, dc in final st. [14 sts] Round 8 Dc in bl of next 7 sts from Round 6, skip fl sts from Round 7, dc in next st from Round 8, (dc2tog, 1dc) twice. [12 sts] Round 9 (1dc, dc2tog) twice, 6dc. [10 sts] Rounds 10-21 Dc in each st around. Fold a pipe cleaner in half, fold the bent end at the tip once or twice to get the general shape of the Head, insert into the neck and head. Stuffing as you go and work around the rem pipe cleaner.

Round 22 (2dc in next st, 4dc) twice. [12 sts] Rounds 23-25 Dc in each st around.

Round 26 (2dc in next st, 5dc) twice. [14 sts] Rounds 27-32 Dc in each st around.
