TENSION

23 sts and 32 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over st st using 4mm needles

PENGUIN JUMPER

Note This sweater has a nice close fitting neck, be careful not to cast off too tightly. We recommend using Elizabeth Zimmermann’s sewn cast off – you can find the instructions at the top of this page.

BACK

Cast on 72 (76: 84: 88: 94) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn D.

Row 1 (RS) *K1, P1; rep from * to end.

Row 2 (WS) *P1, K1; rep from * to end. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece meas 2.5 (3: 3: 4: 4)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a RS row.

Change to 4mm needles.

Next row (WS) Purl.** Change to Yarn A. Starting with a RS knit row, cont working in st st until piece meas 23 (25.5: 30: 32: 34.5)cm, ending after a WS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLE

Next row (RS) Cast off 3 (4: 5: 6: 6) sts, K to end. [69 (72: 79: 82: 88) sts] Next row (WS) Cast off 3 (4: 5: 6: 6) sts, P to end. [66 (68: 74: 76: 82) sts] Cont in st st until piece meas 35.5 (39.5: 45: 49: 53)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a RS row.

Next row (WS) P17 (17: 19: 18: 21), PM, P32 (34: 36: 40: 40), PM, P17 (17: 19: 18: 21).

Cast off, keeping markers in place.

FRONT

Work as for Back to **. Begin Chart Row 1 (RS) Work Row 1 from Chart, PM, K18 (22: 30: 34: 40).

Row 2 P18 (22: 30: 34: 40), sl SM, work Row 2 from Chart. Cont to work from Chart AND AT THE SAME TIME, when piece meas 23 (25.5: 30: 32: 34.5)cm, ending after a WS row, work armhole shaping as follows, keeping Chart placement correct.
