QUESTION OF THE MONTH

From lace and cables to Fair Isle, socks come in many guises

SOCK SOLUTION

Q The socks in your magazine are always so fun to make, but I struggle because I’ve got very narrow feet and the sock toes and heels are always too wide. Is there a way I can make socks that fit me properly?

Sally Peacock

Of course! Socks are always a great thing to knit, but it’s no fun to wear them if they are baggy around the toes and heels. For the toes, there are many options. Check out our tutorial on sock toes on Gathered here: www.gathered.how/knitting-and-crochet/knitting/how-to-choose-the-right-sock-toe-knitting-method/. It’s a great article and you’ll have a lot of fun trying out the different options. For heels, I’d recommend trying the German short-row heel, rather than a traditional heel-flap and gusset, as it works really well for narrow feet. We have another tutorial here, which will take you through it step-by-step: www.gathered. how/knitting-and-crochet/knitting/how-to-knit-short-row-sock-heels/ Good luck on your sock journey! Rachael

The beauty of socks is that they can be altered for that personal fit

Q I like to be eco-friendly when I can, and I’m looking for a recycled hertiage-look yarn that fits the bill. Do you have any suggestions?

Olivia Morgan

New Lanark yarn manufacturers have created a range of both aran and DK yarns that are recycled from repurposed wool waste. The ranges mostly come in a mottled, tweedy finish which is perfect for anything you want to knit with that classic country vibe. They even come in a range of wonderfully rustic shades, that look like they have been inspired by a walk in the British countryside. The yarns start from around £9.50 per
