■ A pair of 4mm needles

■ Stitch holders

■ 8 wooden buttons, 15mm diameter (from Textile Garden www.textilegarden.com)

TENSION

21 sts and 29 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over st st using 4mm needles

STRIPED CARDIGAN

BACK

Cast on 85 (95: 105: 115: 127: 137: 147: 157: 171) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A . Beg with a K row, work in st st for 7 rows, ending with WS facing for next row.

Row 8 (WS) Knit (to form fold line).

Change to 4mm needles. Beg with a K row, cont in st st as folls: Using Yarn A, work 12 rows. Join in Yarn B. Using Yarn B, work 12 rows. Last 24 rows form wide striped st st.

Cont in wide striped st st throughout as folls: Cont straight until Back meas approx 31.5 (32.5: 32.5: 34: 34: 34:

34: 34: 34)cm from fold line row, ending after 8 (10: 10: 2: 2: 2: 2: 2: 2) rows using Yarn B (B: B: A: A: A: A: A: A) and with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Keeping stripes correct, cast off 3 (4: 5: 6: 7: 8: 9: 10: 11) sts at beg of next 2 rows. [79 (87: 95: 103: 113: 121: 129: 137: 149) sts] Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 (5: 5: 7: 7: 7: 9: 9: 11) rows, then on foll 4 (4: 6: 5: 6: 7: 7: 10: 12) alt rows. [65 (69: 73: 79: 87: 93: 97: 99: 103) sts] Cont straight until armholes meas 18 (19: 20.5: 22: 23.5: 25: 26: 27: 28)cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS

Keeping stripes correct, cast off 3 (3: 4: 4: 5: 5: 6: 6: 6) sts at beg of next 4 rows, then 3 (4: 4: 4: 5: 6: 6: 6: 7) sts at beg of foll 2 rows. [47 (49: 49: 55: 57: 61: 61: 63: 65) sts]

SHAPE BACK NECK

Next row (RS) Cast off 4 (4: 4: 5: 5: 6: 6: 6: 7) sts, K until there are 7 (7: 7: 8: 9: 9: 9: 10: 10) sts on right needle and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder.

Work each side of neck separately.

Cast off 3 sts at beg of next row.

Cast off rem 4 (4: 4: 5: 6: 6: 6: 7: 7) sts.

With RS facing, slip centre 25 (27: 27: 29: 29: 31: 31: 31: 31) sts onto a holder (for neckband), rejoin appropriate yarn and K to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings.
