■ A pair of 4mm needles

■ A 3.75mm circular needle, 80cm long

■ Stitch holders

■ Stitch markers

TENSION

22 sts and 28 rows to meas 10x10cm (4x4in) over st st using 4mm needles

Note To ensure that the stripes on the body line up, the rib on the Front starts with a WS row and is one row shorter than on the Back.

BACK

Cast on 102 (106: 112: 118: 124: 130: 134: 140: 146: 152) sts, using 3.75mm needles and Yarn A.

Row 1 (RS) K2 (2: 3: 2: 3: 2: 2: 3: 2: 3), (P2, K2) to last 0 (0: 1: 0: 1: 0: 0: 1: 0: 1) sts, knit to end.

Row 2 (WS) P2 (2: 3: 2: 3: 2: 2: 3: 2: 3), (K2, P2) to last 0 (0: 1: 0: 1: 0: 0: 1: 0: 1) sts, purl to end. Rep Rows 1 and 2 another 9 times.

Change to 4mm needles. Beg with a RS (knit) row, cont in st st, working stripes as follows:

Row 1 Knit to end in Yarn A.

Row 2 P56 (58: 61: 64: 67: 71: 73: 76: 79: 83) in Yarn A, PM, purl to end in Yarn B.

Row 3 Knit to marker in Yarn B,SM, knit to end in Yarn B.

Row 4 Purl to end in Yarn A.

Row 5 Knit to end in Yarn A.

Row 6 Purl to end in Yarn A.

These six rows set stripe pattern and position (marker indicates end of contrast stripes).

Work Rows 1 to 4 of stripe pattern again, ending after a WS row. Now cont in stripe pattern throughout (beg with row 5), while shaping waist as follows:
