STITCHING TERMS

Right side (RS)/Wrong side (WS): The right side of the fabric is usually the side with the pattern or with the shinier/smoother finish. The selvedge is usually printed on the right side of the fabric.

Understitch: A line of stitching worked close to a seam on the inside of a garment, used to help prevent facings and linings rolling to the right side. This line of stitching will not show on the right side of the garment.

Finish the seam allowances: Finish the seam allowances to prevent fraying. This can be done with an overlocker, a machine zigzag stitch or pinking shears.

Topstitch: Used to neaten edges and hold seam allowances in place. Stitch from the right side of the fabric.

CB/CF: Abbreviations for centre front/centre back of the garment.

Press: Pressing is done on the wrong side of the fabric to prevent marking the right side. Pressing is the motion of placing the iron on the fabric, pressing down, applying steam if necessary, lifting and then placing it down, whereas ironing is the motion of sliding the iron back and forth across the fabric.

Toile: A toile is a sample garment made to check the fit and make any necessary amends. If you make any amends, transfer these to your pattern. We recommend making a toile before cutting into your fabric.
