STITCHING TERMS

Finish the raw edges: Use a zigzag stitch or use an overlocker to finish the raw fabric edges to stop them from fraying.

Seam allowance: Sew all seams with 1.5cm seam allowance unless otherwise stated. All seam allowances are included in this pattern.

Right side (RS)/Wrong side (WS): The right side of the fabric has the design on it. For a plain fabric, the right side is usually a little brighter or shinier.

Princess seams: Seams that run from the shoulder seam, over the centre of the bust, and down to the hemline. Princess seams eliminate the need for darts.

Toile: A test garment, often made from calico or muslin to check the fit or test a pattern before the real fabric is used. Known as a muslin in the US.

CUTTING OUT

Step one Choose your size using the size chart on the pattern envelope, then cut out all the pattern pieces according to your size or trace the pattern pieces onto pattern paper. Follow the directions on the pattern pieces, laying them along the grainline. Some pattern pieces state to cut one or two pairs – this means that one piece is the mirror-image of the other, as you are cutting the two pieces on folded fabric.

Step two Pin your pieces in place, then double check everything before cutting them out of the fabric you have chosen. Transfer all pattern markings using tacking stitches, pins or small snips within the seam allowance for notches. Step three From the main fabric, cut: Centre Front Bodice (A): One on fold Side Front Bodice (B): One pair Front Facing (C): One Back Bodice (D): One pair Sleeve (E): One pair Sleeve Cuff (F): One pair Collar (G): Two pairs Waistband (H): One on fold Front Skirt (I): One on fold Back Skirt (J): One pair Step four From the iron-on interfacing, cut: Front Facing (C): One Sleeve Cuff (F): One pair Collar (G): One pair

PREPARING THE PIECES

Step two Press the iron-on interfacing pieces to the WS of the Front Facing, the Sleeve Cuffs and one pair of the Collar pieces.
