This satin maxi by Ammara Zaman is the perfect combination of comfort and style. With no fiddly fastenings, it’s a quick sew too!

YOU WILL NEED

■ Fabric length corresponding to your waist measurement times 2.5

■ Iron on interfacing

■ Loop turner

■ Matching thread

■ Basic sewing kit

NOTES:

■ Seam allowance is 1.5 cm unless otherwise stated

■ The width of the skirt layers will be cut on the selvedge edge

■ If your inner skirt measurement is wider than your width of fabric, the orientation of your skirt will be on the cross grain, so you will need to pick a fabric without an obvious print on the straight grain for this design to work

MATERIALS USED

■ Polyester satin

RECOMMENDED FABRICS

■ Any fabric with a soft drape: silks, satins, crepes, chiffons & viscose

TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS

Step one Length of Skirt: Measure the length you would like for the skirt, from waist to hem. Step two Width of Skirt Layers: The first skirt layer will be your hip measurement plus 30-50 cm. If you prefer the skirt to overlap so that you don’t need to wear a slip underneath, choose the larger measurement. The width of the second skirt layer should be at least 30 cm less than the first layer. Step three Length of Waist Tie: The waist tie is one long piece that is folded and then cut in half to make two pieces. Measure your waist for the length of the ties: about 2.5 times your waist measurement for a tie in the back. Step four Width of Waist Ties: I made the waist ties 9 cm wide, which includes a 1.5 cm seam allowance.

CREATE THE SKIRT PIECES

Step one For the skirt layers, cut two rectangles corresponding to the measurements you noted earlie
