Sew up Debbie Humphreys' pet bed and gift the dog in your life something to dream about

DOG BED

YOU WILL NEED

■ Cotton fabric: 1.5x1.5m (we used Cloud 9 Fabrics Window Dressing in Ocean/Fuchsia, find at www.hantex. co.uk/cloud9)

■ Tailor’s chalk

■ Wadding, 1.5m: 200g

■ Hollowfibre filling: 500g

■ Upholstery basecloth: 1m (we used Corovin)

■ Matching bias binding: 2.5m x 3cm wide

■ Basic sewing kit

NOTES

■ Measuring 70 x 45 x 28cm when finished, this bed will comfortably fit a medium-sized dog, but if you want to make the bed bigger or smaller, scale the measurements up or down to suit.

■ Use a 1.5cm seam allowance throughout, unless stated.

CUTTING OUT

Step one from main fabric, cut: One 70x59cm Bed Front Panel One 70x59cm Bed Back Panel Two 45x59cm Bed Side Panels Two 70x45cm Cushion Top/Bottom panels Two 70x12cm Cushion Side Panels Two 45x12cm Cushion Side Panels Step two from upholstery fabric, cut: One 70x45cm Base Panel

MAKING THE BED

Step one Take the Bed Front Panel and fold in half along the length, then again along the width. Chalk out a rectangular section 10cm down from the corner fold and 15cm across. Mark on a curved edge where the two lines meet. Cut away the marked section, then open out the fabric. 01

Step two Fold the Bed Front, Bed Back and Bed Side Panels in half along the length with wrong sides (WS) facing. Press along the crease, then use these folded panels as templates to cut a piece of wadding for each of the four sides.

Step three Open out the fabric panels. Pin each piece of wadding to its corresponding panel along the WS of one long edge. For the Bed Front Panel, pin the wadding to the WS of the edge with the cut-out section. Sew in place. 02

Step four With right sides (RS) facing, align the short edges of Bed Front Panel and one Bed Side Panel. Pin and sew.

Step five Sew the remaining Bed Side Panels to the other end of the front panel in the same way. Repeat to sew the Bed Back Panel.

ADDING THE BASE

Step one Align one long edge of the Base Panel along RS of the base of Bed Back Panel fabric. Pin and sew. Repeat to join the two Bed Side Panels, and lastly Bed Front Panel to the base. 03
