After 16 years in the fashion industry, pattern designer Becky founded her very own label − Pattern Paper Scissors

sewing and fashion design has always been a part of my world. As a child my mum would make me clothes by drawing around me on the floor, and many of my ancestors were seamstresses. I found a love for designing things, and making items of clothing or customising my outfits became a big passion, leading me into the world of fashion at university. I went on to spend 16 years in the fashion industry, designing and creating clothing and patterns for the high street and ready-to-wear-brands in the UK.

LIFE CHOICES

Starting a family gave me a chance to re-evaluate my life choices, and seeing my daughters delicate skin made me think more about the clothes I was putting her in. I questioned the mass-produced clothes from developing countries and the insane amount of water and chemicals used to make them. Having my daughter Edie made me think about the future and what kind of a world she will inhabit. And so, I decided it was time to focus on the important things in my life and to work more closely with people wishing to learn a new skill and in a smaller more sustainably-aware way.

While on maternity leave, I pulled out my sewing machine and started making bits and bobs for Edie while she napped. I re-discovered the amazing feeling of saying “I made it myself” when asked where my creation was from, and these proud moments became something I wanted to help others achieve too. Here started a passion for helping others to make their own clothes for themselves and their family, while enjoying a creative hobby and having some “me-time”.

STARTING MY BRAND

Founding Pattern Paper Scissors was about finding my calling. I want to inspire all sewists (including beginners) to pick up a sewing pattern and find their flair for sewing. To discover what they can achieve with their own hands and celebrate their skills as they gift their unique creation to their loved one. My aim is to provide contemporary, unique patterns and kits with complementing fabrics and easy step-by-step guides to make comfortable, one-of-a-kind clothing for your kids. I’m passionate about helping people take time for themselves, to get creative and to clear their minds with my easy-to-follow sewing patterns.
