‘we’re guided by family in spirit’

Two readers share how sorrow turned to happiness with gentle nudges from the other side

‘Mum helped me move to France’

TAMSIN CHUBB, 47, followed the spiritual signs to a new life running wellbeing retreats abroad

Yoga mat tucked under my arm, I swung through the doors of the centre where my yoga class was about to start (or so I thought). Instead, I noticed a sign that read Clairvoyant Evening.

‘Do me a favour,’ I thought, heading off to find my yoga class. Only it turned out it wasn’t on that night, and I was disappointed as I was really looking forward to the class.

I’d discovered Sivananda yoga in my twenties, following the sudden death of my father from skin cancer. The breathing techniques eased the panic attacks I was suffering, and helped me find a sense of calm. But when my mother had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2007 and died within nine months, I’d neglected my practice for years. I’d started going to classes again in the hope it would help ease my grief, and it was exactly what I’d needed.

However, on that autumn evening in 2009, the universe was giving me a nudge. I took the hint and paid £5 to attend the psychic event.

‘I’m obviously supposed to be here,’ I thought as I took a seat at the back of the room.

Until then, I’d had a few tarot readings but only for fun. On this occasion, the medium channelled readings for a couple of people, then told a woman near the stage, ‘I have a message for you. I have a strong feeling about France. There’s a house in France that’s important.’

The woman said the message didn’t make sense. Unperturbed, the psychic added, ‘This property will become a dominant feature. You will find happiness and joy in this house.’

I was shocked. In 2005, my mother had bought a holiday home in rural south-west France, in Montesquieu. The three-storey property had lain empty since her death. ‘Was this message for me?’ I wondered. The psychic continued, ‘I have a woman who says she’s been guiding you. She says she always supports you. I can see another woman with her. She’s elderly. I can see a cross, but there’s no Jesus on this cross.’

I was sure the medium was talking about my mother, and the person with her was my grandmother. Gran was very religious and spiritual, a Methodist, and this religion has a plain cross.

Finally, the psychic added, ‘I can see a typewriter, and your grandmother says her name is Gladys.’

My grandmother had died in the late 1990s. Her name was Gladys. And she’d left me her typewriter. I was stunned by the clarity and accuracy of the message, and I knew my grandmother and mother had come through to give me a sign, to let me know they were with me.
