HORNBY ANNOUNCES 2024 PLANS

In early January, Hornby revealed its range of new products for 2024, although the number of all-new models was much less than in previous years. New Head of Brand, Martyn Weaver, had informed the model railway press in December that 2024 would be a year in which Hornby strove to catch up with its list of products delayed from previous launches, owing to the global after-effects of the Covid pandemic.

As a result, the coming year should feature a glut of models reaching the market, including several hotly anticipated steam-outline locomotives and carriages. The LMS ‘Black Five’ is one example, along with the LNER ‘Coronation’ coaching stock and observation car.

Additionally, Hornby stated that a few more surprises will be revealed throughout the year, including new developments in ‘TT:120’, so there’s plenty to look forward to!

LOCOMOTION No. 1 STEALS THE SHOW

Hornby’s most striking announcement was Locomotion No. 1, which is being produced in ‘OO’ gauge to mark the impending 200th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

Built in 1825 by George and Robert Stephenson, it was the world’s first steam locomotive to haul a passenger train and, in retirement, stood on a plinth at Darlington station for over 80 years.

Hornby’s model will make for an impressive sight, with fully operational valve gear and a footplate crew suitably clad in top hats. A 3D render and an array of components were revealed to the press in December, and I can vouch for how intricate the castings and mouldings will be.
