CLASSIC ‘LANKY’ 0‐6‐0 FROM OO WORKS

With hundreds of examples built over several decades, the L&Y’s Class 27 0‐6‐0 proved to be versatile, powerful and reliable, with over two dozen examples requisitioned for use in France during the First World War and numerous examples surviving well into BR days.

The Class 27 ought to have been on the radar of the major model manufacturers but, instead, it has fallen to OO Works to offer the first ready-to-run version in ‘OO’ gauge.

This is a hand-built model, expertly constructed from cast and etched metal components, which explains the premium price, and it captures the elegant lines of the prototype well. A vertically mounted motor sits within the firebox, driving the rear coupled axle, while ensuring that the boiler is rendered in full relief. A cosmetic representation of the internal valve gear is also included, which looks effective. Although it lacks the DCC capability and some of the finer details found on most mass market RTR models – particularly the brake and underframe gear – the Class 27 is impressive nonetheless, and our sample ran beautifully. Six versions are available, in LMS and BR liveries, plus a plain black option for easier customisation.

‘J50’ FOR ‘TT’

Hornby announced a modest range of new products for its ‘TT:120’ gauge range in early April, with the headlines grabbed by the LNER ‘J50’. The addition of a tank locomotive is particularly welcome, contrasting with larger 4‐6‐0s and ‘Pacifics’ dominating the existing portfolio of products in this new scale.

Gresley’s popular 0‐6‐0T will be offered in three versions initially, encompassing LNER and BR guises, with a three-pole motor and six-pin DCC decoder socket specified.

Models are expected to arrive this Autumn, with pre-orders now being taken via selected ‘TT:120’ stockists or direct from the Hornby website.
