Woah, did Thomas Crown find a time machine?

You don’t have to be as cool as Steve McQueen to drive this reborn beach buggy, but it helps. The Manx 2.0 is the first entirely new model from Meyers in nearly 60 years – and this is not just a throwback to the one McQueen famously drove in the 1968 film: it’s all-electric, with a motor hooked up to each of the rear wheels, meaning it’ll pull off sand-spraying donuts all day long. Or at least until you run out of battery.

You mean it’s not a VW Beetle underneath any more?

Nope, the reborn Manx is all-new, with a bespoke aluminium chassis that promises to keep the weight down to less than 750kg – easily less than half that of your typical road-going EV. It’ll get plenty of modern niceties, like independent rear suspension, disc brakes and power steering – none of which came close to making the cut on the OG model. There are a few design nods to the original, though, such as the oval taillights and mirror-finish alloys shaped a bit like Beetle hubcaps.

It looks great – but is it all show and no go?

Far from it. Meyers isn’t talking max speed just yet, but buyers can expect over 200bhp from the top-spec model, which is good for 0-60mph in about 4.5 seconds. At least on tarmac. There’ll be a choice of 20kWh and 40kWh batteries, good for up to 150 and 300 miles of range respectively.

So when can I get one?

It’ll hit production in 2024, following a 50-car beta programm
