The best new tech heading your way

1 NOTHING PHONE (2A)

You don’t normally expect mid-range phones to be more attractive than the flagships from which they borrow. That’s not the way it’s done. But Nothing isn’t a company that does the things it’s supposed to do. Thus it has offered the Phone (2a) a contemporary refresh that really hits the mark.

It scales down the range’s Glyph interface to three rear mounted light clusters, but arguably ends up with a classier, cooler design for it. The rear makes even more of the ribbon cables, as artistic as they are functional. The camera bump may be more distinct, but its industrial styling – surrounded by the NFC coil to create what Nothing calls ‘The Eyes’ – makes it work. Even the clear back cover, always a highlight on Nothing phones, is an evolution, from the flat of the original to a pillowed glass on the Phone (2) to this (admittedly seemingly plastic) super-tough wraparound unibody rear.

Even the processor impresses. A special custom Nothing spin on the heavy-hitting octo-core MediaTek Dimensity 7200 outperforms the original Nothing Phone by some margin, promises enough battery efficiency to last two days on a charge, and is liquid cooled to keep things frosty.

So this isn’t just a more affordable spin on Nothing’s top-line tech. That would be too easy. This is Nothing continuing to flex, evolving its abilities and jumping at the opportunity to put excellent design into more pockets. Now we’re just waiting for an ultra-budget CMF phone...

BIG AND BRIGHT

Even the screen is above the mark we’d expect. It’s a generous 6.7-inch flexible AMOLED that scales between 120Hz and 30Hz as the situation demands, and peaks at a sunlight-friendly 1,400 nits. Surrounding it are handsomely symmetrical 2.1mm bezels – that means they’re thinner than you’ll find on any other Nothing phone.

MASSIVE BATTERY

Although Nothing’s software and processing tweaks certainly contribute to the Phone (2a)’s battery life, the battery itself doesn’t hurt: it’s a huge 5,000mAh capacity cell that can apparently retain 90% capacity after 1,000 charges. 45W fast charging ensures you won’t be waiting all day for it to top up, either.

Phone addiction is killing us right before our eyes. Endless doomscrolling, constant brightly coloured clips of unrealistic ideals, games that do nothing but waste our time. The Minimal Phone is basically the antithesis of that, desi
