This month’s Book Club read is a romance about fate, longing, and learning to live in the moment

Meet Me When My Heart Stops by Becky Hunter

The idea for this book played around in Becky’s head for a long time before she found the courage to write it.

‘It’s such a big story, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to pull it off,’ she says.

Emer y is born with a health condition that means her heart could stop at any moment. If those around her act quickly, her heart can be restarted. But when it happens, she is briefly technically dead. Each time Emery’s hear t stops, she meets Nick. His purpose is to help people adjust to the fact they’re dead, to help them say goodbye before they move on. As Emery’s life progresses, she finds herself longing for those moments when her hear t will stop — so that she can see Nick again.

It’s a story of two fated lovers who long for each other but are destined never to share more than a few fleeting moments — because if they were to be together, it would mean the end of Emery’s life.

This is a book about living for the now, and not assuming that you know what the future will bring.

But what did our Book Clubbers think?

Right from the first chapter, I was invested in the main character, Emery, and how she navigated her life with a hear t condition. I enjoyed following Emer y and her family and friends, not knowing where she would travel next and when she would meet up with Nick. The stor y is written at a gentle pace, and I felt like I knew ever yone so well and was rooting for a good outcome for them all. I would definitely recommend this book for an easy, feel-good read.

This is an emotional book from the very beginning. Sometimes I wanted to shout at Emer y to live her life instead of waiting for death. The best thing about this book is that you cannot predict the ending at all. I had a few guesses, but they were not even close, and the ending was quite a surprise. I really enjoyed the stor yline as it was so different, and I found the book hard to put down.
