TEAM: Chennai Super Kings ROLE: Big-hitting right-hand bat PLAYS LIKE: A right-handed Suresh Raina ABOUT: CSK dropped INR 8.40 (USD 1 million approx) on big-hitting Sameer Rizvi who comes with a reputation for dominating spin. Dubbed as a right-handed Suresh Raina, he caught the eye after hitting the most sixes for Kanpur Superstars in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League and could well make his IPL debut this season in the absence of Ambati Rayudu.

SHUBHAM DUBEY

AGE: 29

TEAM: Rajasthan Royals ROLE: Classy left-hand bat PLAYS LIKE: The archetypal modern finisher ABOUT: A relatively late bloomer having made his T20, List A and first-class debuts in 2021, 2023 and 2024 respectively, Shubham Dubey has earned his chance after a string of impressive showings for Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring his 221 runs from seven innings at a strike rate of 187.28, including an unbeaten 58 from 20 balls as Vidarbha chased down 213 against Bengal with 13 balls to spare.

ARAVELLY AVANISH

AGE: 18

TEAM: Chennai Super Kings ROLE: Six-hitting wicketkeeper-batter

PLAYS LIKE: Yashasvi Jaiswal ABOUT: Aravelly Avanish kept wicket for India at the recent Under-19 World Cup and has a chance of finding himself behind the sticks for CSK in this year’s IPL. Capable of clearing the rope with ease, he hit 13 sixes in a 93-ball 163 for India A U19s versus India B U19s last November, he could become a regular feature with the gloves for CSK for years to come.

ARSHAD KHAN

AGE: 26

TEAM: Mumbai Indians ROLE: Left-arm seamer, left-hand stroke-maker PLAYS LIKE: Irfan Pathan ABOUT: Left-arm seamer Arshad Khan made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians during the 2023 campaign having first signed for the franchise in 2022 after just a handful of one-day appearances for Madhya Pradesh. After missing the entire 2022 tournament through injury, he picked up five wickets in six matches last year and will be hoping for the 2024 edition to be a breakthrough tournament for him.

SWASTIK CHIKARA

AGE: 18

TEAM: Delhi Capitals ROLE: Destructive right-hand opening bat PLAYS LIKE: The future ABOUT: A more-than-a-run-a-ball century at the top of the order on List A debut for Uttar Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy last November, following a bucket-load of runs in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League, propelled 18-year-old Swastik Chikara into the spotlight and has earned him a gig with the Delhi Capitals. He’ll have to wait his turn however as their squad includes the likes of David Warner, Prithvi Shaw and Jake Fraser-McGurk.
