Red Alert

‘Unexpected red’ has been a popular theme in online interiors feeds recently and it also translates to gardens. A judicious splash of red can bring planting schemes – or indeed broader garden views – to life. Two-Tier System

When John Fowler and Nancy Lancaster bought Lady Sybil Colefax’s share of her interiors firm 90 years ago, the pair scoured the country for unusual antiques. One treasured find was a pair of late-19th-century, two-tier flower holders later bequeathed to the V&A. The design suited Fowler’s marrying of the humble with the grand, and he often arranged cottage-garden flowers in the stands.
