WITH his side having banished their away-day blip in emphatic fashion during the week, Kieran McKenna believes Ipswich Town are still well placed in the tantalising battle for the Championship’s second automatic promotion spot.

The Tractor Boys taught struggling Millwall a footballing lesson in south-east London on Wednesday night, hitting four unanswered goals, to record a first win on the road since mid-December.

It marked a return to travelling excellence, with the Suffolk side having gone unbeaten in their opening 11 games away from home before their mid-season wobble.

Town went into yesterday’s trip to Swansea tucked in nicely behind second-placed Leeds and third-placed Southampton in the battle to go up alongside runaway leaders Leicester. McKenna, right, can’t wait for the enticing run-in.

“We had been long overdue a big win, a result like that can vanise us for sure, espegalcially when you are in a scrap at the very top,” said the sought-after 37-year-old manager after the midweek victory.

“Wins haven’t flowed as easily of late but what’s been really important to me is that the mood in the changing room has been resilient and positive throughout.

That has shown me more than winning a game could.

“I take pride in the culture here, it’s exactly what you need for the battle we have ahead of us.”

McKenna dipped into the transfer market just before the January window closed to bring in former Blues striker Kieffer Moore, 31, on loan from Bournemouth and to snap up promising striker Ali Al-Hamadi, 21, from AFC Wimbledon.

Welsh international Moore has hit the ground running, netting three in three going into this weekend, while Iraq forward Al-Hamadi bagged his first on Wednesday night, slotting home an injury time penalty
