ELATED boss Darren Ferguson hailed home-town hero Harrison Burrows after he scored both goals to earn Peterborough United a dramatic Bristol Street Motors Trophy final victory.

During Posh’s last success under the Wembley arch ten years ago, Burrows was in the crowd cheering his heroes on to victory over Chesterfield. This time, the 22-year-old captain was front and centre against Wycombe Wanderers.

The left-back rifled home to open the scoring in the 85th minute, but it was all-square four minutes left when Chairboys sub Dale Taylor fired a superb 20-yard volley into the corner of the net with his first touch.

An incredible finale reached a climax as Burrows’ booming cross from out on the wing sailed over keeper Franco Ravizzoli for the winner in the first minute of stoppage time.

It sent 23,000 Posh fans delirious with joy and made it two triumphs in the competition for the club.

Boss Ferguson, who incidentally was also manager during the 2014 success, was gushing with admiration for man-of-the-match Burrows after the final whistle last Sunday.

“What an incredible moment for Harrison, he so deserves it, and I couldn’t be happier for him,” beamed the Scot, who embarked on his fourth spell in charge of Posh last year. “His story is a great example of what is possible in a game of that magnitude. It means so much to him and his family.

“Harrison’s been patient with his role changing around quite a bit. He can be a midfielder, a number 10 or even a winger but I think we’ve now found his best position at leftback.

“I put him there on the final day of last season and he’s never really looked back. He deserves all the attention and adulation he’s received this year. He’s established himself as a true captain.”

Having now won the Trophy twice as a manager and once as a player, Ferguson knows all about how success in the competition can galvanize a club.
