Titanium is very tough, corrosion-resistant and non-toxic. Lightweight backpackers love it for pots and mugs because it’s lighter than hard anodised aluminium and much lighter than stainless steel whilst being even more durable. Titanium water bottles have never been that common, but more and more are appearing on the market. I’ve been trying this 1200ml wide mouth bottle from SilverAnt and I like it very much.

The bottle has a single-wall construction as it’s designed for cold drinks; it won’t keep your coffee hot for very long. The titanium isn’t coated or lined but has an abrasive sandblasted a leakproof silicone seal. A neoprene-type stretchy thermal carry sleeve with attachment loop is provided.

The sleeve is useful in cold weather as the bottle can be chilly to the touch, but in summer I might leave this at home.

The look is very plain: just a matt grey bottle with no bright is good to hold though, feeling secure rather than shiny and slippery. The wide mouth makes it easy to drink from and easy is compatible with the CamelBak Eddy Cap.

An advantage of a plain titanium bottle is that you can heat it on a stove without doing any damage. The tall, narrow shape isn’t ideal for this – the bottle needs to be balanced carefully – and I wouldn’t choose to boil water in it. Where this feature is useful is in sub-zero temperatures. If water in the bottle freezes just put it on the stove for a short while to thaw it out.

The 233g weight is a bit less than a stainless steel bottle such as the 1182ml Klean Kanteen Wide Bottle, which weighs 244g, but much higher than aluminium (the classic 1 litre Sigg Bottle weighs 147 grams) and plastic (the equally classic Nalgene Ultralite 1 litre Wide Mouth HDPE Bottle weighs 108g). The SilverAnt should outlast all the others though as titanium is so durable.

That durability along with being corrosion-resistant are good reasons for choosing titanium. Weight for weight it’s stronger than stainless steel. It doesn’t dent easily. This bottle could be the only one you ever need. Titanium is also non-toxic and non-allergenic so there’s no risk of contaminating food and the metal doesn’t leave a taste. SilverAnt describes titanium as biocompatible, which means it’s non-harmful to the body and doesn’t leach chemicals. There is one big drawback – the cost. Titanium is expensive. But you won’t be replacing the bottle for a very long time, if ever.
