Moonbeam scarf

This fabulously colourful scarf is knitted using the entrelac technique

VIVEKA VELUPILLAI

“THIS SCARF is a celebration of the vivid yet soothing texture of entrelac knitting, in the same way that a moonbeam is both vivid and soothing as it splashes over the deep night sea,” says Viveka Velupillai. “It is knitted horizontally, to make for long, wavy stripes that wrap snugly around your neck, with the edges left as zigzags rather than worked as a straight edge. This pattern uses beads at the short end tips, to give them added weight and sparkle. It is knitted on smaller needles to tighten the gauge of the squares.”

PATTERN NOTES

Entrelac is worked in tiers of rectangles joined together as you knit. Slip the first stitch of every row to create a selvedge for picking up stitches. Use long circular needles in order to hold the rectangles across the length of the scarf.

Note: odd-numbered tiers have 90 rectangles, and even-numbered tiers have 91 rectangles.

TIER 1

Rectangle 1 Using 2mm needles, yarn A and the backwards loop method, cast on 5 sts. Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, P4. Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, K4. Rows 3-10: Rep rows 1 and 2 four times. Do not turn after final row. Cont with attached yarn across tier.

Rectangle 2 With RS facing and attached yarn, cast on 5 sts to RH needle next to previous rectangle using the backwards loop method. Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, P4, turn. Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, K4, turn. Rows 3-10: Rep rows 1 and 2 four times. Do not turn after final row.

Rectangles 3-90 Work as Rectangle 2. There will be 90 rectangles on RH needle, with the last row of each rectangle as live sts. After final rectangle, break yarn A and turn work to WS.

TIER 2

Rectangle 1 With WS facing and yarn B, cast on 5 sts to LH needle using the backwards loop method. Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, P3, P2tog with live stitch from rectangle in tier below, turn. Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, K4, turn. Rows 3-8: Rep rows 1 and 2 three times. Row 9 (WS): Sl 1, P3, P2tog with last live stitch from rectangle in tier below, do not turn.

Cont with attached yarn across tier.

Rectangle 2 With WS facing and attached yarn, pick up and purl 5 sts evenly across edge of next rectangle from tier below. Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, K4, turn. Row 2 (WS): Sl 1, P3, P2tog with live stitch from rectangle in tier below, turn. Rows 3-8: Rep rows 1 and 2 three times. Row 9 (RS): Sl 1, K4, turn. Row 10 (WS): Sl 1, P3, P2tog with last live stitch from rectangle in tier below, do not turn.

Rectangles 3-90 Work as Rectangle 2.
