SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

GERMAN SHORT ROWS

German short-row shaping is worked back and forth to raise the back neckline and improve the fit.

On RS: Work to the turning point indicated in the pattern. Turn work. With yarn in front, slip the first stitch from the LH needle purlwise onto the RH needle. Pull the working yarn tight up and over the RH needle to the back of work and bring it between the needles to the front again, ready for purling. The slipped stitch looks like it has two legs – this is a double stitch (DS). Keeping the double stitch tight, continue to WS row.

On WS: Work to the turning point indicated in the pattern. Turn work. With yarn in front, slip the first stitch from the LH needle purlwise onto the RH needle. Pull the working yarn tight up and over the RH needle to the back of work ready for knitting. The slipped stitch looks like it has two legs – this is a double stitch (DS). Keeping the double stitch tight, continue to RS row.

Resolving double stitches On RS: Work to the double stitch and knit both ‘legs’ together. On WS: Work to the double stitch and purl both ‘legs’ together. For more guidance, see our Masterclass in Issue 188.
