FOR MORE than a decade, Nina Granlund Sæther has been exploring Norway’s museums and folk art collections to discover regional knitting styles and share them with knitters around the world. Having published two popular books of sock and mitten patterns, she has now brought together more than 40 of her best-loved designs and brand-new patterns in this colourful collection.
It’s a real treat to browse through the pages of this book, which has projects with a distinctly heritage look, but also modern interpretations of classic designs. Among the mittens, for example, is a handsome two-colour diamond-patterned design for men and women, based on a sample from 1858; the ‘Sugar Top’ mittens, meanwhile, are an explosion of vibrant colour, and cute colourwork hearts and birds decorate the charming ‘Love Mittens’.
Nina brings us mitten styles from all across Norway: iconic black and white Selbu mittens with their distinctive star motifs; rose mittens from Skjåk; colourwork Vestland rose mittens paired with Fana-style textured cuffs; and a pretty pair decorated with lace and cables in a style known as ‘bride’s mittens’.
