KNITTING PETER RABBIT

by Claire Garland

THE ANIMAL characters created by the writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter more than 120 years ago still enchant children and adults alike today. This wonderful new book from Claire Garland features knitting patterns for 12 of Beatrix Potter’s best-loved creations, which have been carefully designed to remain incredibly faithful to her original illustrations.

The knitted version of Peter Rabbit, the star of the book and perhaps the most famous of Potter’s characters, stands at 24cm tall, and has a perfectly shaped nose, head and body, and perky ears with a delicate pink kidsilk lining. Peter comes with his own coat and slippers cut from felt, plus a little felt carrot to hold. His cousin, Benjamin Bunny, has a smart felt jacket and a knitted tam o’ shanter.

The pattern for the adorable Mrs Tiggy-Winkle uses King Cole Luxury Fur yarn in a multicoloured shade to mimic the hedgehog spines on her head. The same yarn is also used to create the bushy tail on Squirrel Nutkin.

Claire Garland’s attention to detail is outstanding, and all the characters are instantly recognisable - Tom Kitten, with his wide-eyed look and tabby patterning on his head and body; Mr Jeremy Fisher, with his neatly shaped frog head, and long legs finished with smart spats; Tommy Brock the badger; and Mr Tod, the handsome fox (who is more than 40cm tall). The smallest animals are the teeny Tailor of Glouce
