These smart colourwork socks are knitted from the toe up with German short-row heels

KELLY MENZIES

Twisted rib cuffs finish this toe-up design

A CHECKERBOARD pattern worked in orange and lavender decorates this sock design from Kelly Menzies. The stranded colourwork is complemented by cuffs, heels and toes in a plum shade. Knitted from the toe up, they have heels shaped using German short rows, and twisted ribbing - be sure to use a stretchy cast-off method for the cuffs.

Kelly’s design uses Socks Yeah!, the 4ply yarn from Rachel Coopey. This is available in 33 stunning shades, including elegant colours inspired by minerals, and a range of neon hues.

PATTERN NOTES

The sock is knitted toe up using the Fair Isle technique (stranding colour not in use loosely across the back of the work). The project uses Judy’s Magic Cast On method, and Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off. GERMAN SHORT-ROW HEEL

Using yarn C and 2.5mm needles, work as follows:

Row 1 (RS): K9 (11:12:13) pm, K10 (10:12:14) pm, K9 (11:12:13). Turn work.

Row 2 (WS): DS, P27 (31:35:39). Turn work.

Row 3: DS, knit to last DS. Turn work.

Row 4: DS, purl to last DS. Turn work.

Rep rows 3 and 4, until all sts on the outside of the markers are double stitches except the last st worked.

This will become a DS on the next row.

HEEL CENTRE

Row 1 (RS): DS, K to next DS, K9 (11:12:13) knitting the double stitches together. Work a w&t around the next st. (This will prevent a hole in the corner of the heel).
