Turn heads in this vibrant intarsia cardigan, which uses an unusual construction method

DARIO TUBIANA

PATTERN NOTES

The body of this cardigan is worked in two halves - the Left Front and Left Back are one piece, and the Right Front and Right Back are a second piece. Once completed, they are joined at the centre back using mattress stitch. Take care when joining the two pieces to ensure that the patterning lines up correctly. The sleeves are worked separately with set-in shaping.

Work the coloured panel using the intarsia method, using small balls of colour and twisting colours together on the WS where they meet to prevent holes forming. Due to the complexity of offering different sizes in this pattern, a single chart is given for both sides of the body (Chart A), and separate charts for the left sleeve (Chart B) and right sleeve (Chart C). The pattern will tell you which stitch of each chart your first row begins and ends on. As you increase and decrease across the body and sleeves, ensure that you follow the colourwork pattern as shown on the chart, taking new sts into patt where appropriate.

LEFT FRONT AND BACK

Using 4mm needles, beginning with st 21 (16:11:6:1) of Row 1 of Chart A and yarn A (A:A:B:B), cast on 71 (81:91:101:111) sts, changing between colours as you work across the row as shown for your size, and placing a side seam marker after the first 53 (58:63:68:73) sts you have worked. This marker placement is also shown as a blue vertical line on Chart A. You should end Row 1 with st 91 (96:101:106: 111) of Chart A, and you should have worked 18 (23:28:33:38) sts after side seam mrk. The 53 (58:63:68:73) sts before the side seam mrk are your Back sts and the 18 (23:28:33:38) sts after the side seam mrk are your Front sts. As you continue to work, slip your mrk each row so that it stays in the same position.

SHAPE LEFT FRONT EDGE (INCREASES)

Now work in st st, following Chart A, and inc 1 st at front edge ONLY on the next 22 foll rows. This will mean increasing at the beg of WS (purl) rows, and at the end of RS (knit) rows.

When these 22 incs are complete, inc 1 st at the end of the 8 foll RS rows only, and then at the end of the 5 foll 4th rows. 106 (116:126:136:146) sts. You should just have completed Row 59 of Chart A and should now have 53 (58:63:68: 73) sts either side of your side seam marker. Continue straight until you have completed Row 86 of Chart A.

SHAPE LEFT FRONT EDGE (DECREASES)

You will now decrease at the front edge to shape the V-neck shaped
