This gorgeously plump floor cushion has Fair Isle motifs worked in a chunky roving wool

PATTERN NOTES

The cushion cover is knitted in rows: the front is knitted as a square. The back is worked in two parts, each worked from the side towards the middle, with a button band on one side and a buttonhole band on the other side.

On RS rows knit the chart from right to left. On WS rows purl the chart from left to right. Catch the colour not in use behind the first stitch on RS, and in front of the first stitch on WS.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

ELASTIC CAST-OFF

*K2tog tbl, slip st back on to LH needle; rep from * to last st. Cut yarn and pull through final loop.

FRONT

Using 6mm needles, yarn A and the long-tail method, cast on 123 sts.

Knit 1 WS row.

WORK CHART A

Join yarn as indicated, work Rows 1-28 then rep only Rows 1-15 from Chart A, working 22-st rep 5 times.

SET CHART B

Working 22-st rep 5 times, work Rows 1-35 of Chart B.

REPEAT CHART A

Work Rows 1-28 of Chart A, then rep only Rows 1-17.

Knit 1 row on WS.

Cast off using the elastic method (see Special Techniques).

FIRST BACK PANEL

With RS facing, working on side from right to left and using 5mm needles, pick up and knit 123 sts (about 1 st per row, missing 4 rows evenly).

Using 6mm needles, work Rows 1-15 of Chart A.

Work Rows 1-35 of Chart B. Work Rows 3-15 of Chart A.

Then work only Rows 1-3 of Chart B.

BUTTON BAND

Change to 5mm needles.

Knit 10 rows (5 garter ridges).

Cast off using the elastic method.

SECOND BACK PANEL

With RS facing, working from opposite side as First Back Panel and using 5mm needles, pick up and knit 123 sts.

Using 6mm needles, work Rows 1-15 of Chart A.

Work Rows 1-35 of Chart B. Work Rows 3-15 of Chart A.

Then work only Rows 1-3 of Chart B.

BUTTONHOLE BAND

Change to 5mm needles.

Knit 4 rows.

Next row (WS): K5, *P2tog, yo; rep from * to last 6 sts, P1, K5. Knit 5 rows.

Cast off using the elastic method.

FINISHING

Weave in ends and block by lightly steaming to measurements, with bands measuring 3.5cm deep each, and following any yarn care instructions on the ball band.
