SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

ALTERNATE CABLE CAST-ON

Make a slip knot on left needle. Knit 1 st into slip knot and place this st on left needle.
*Insert right needle between first and second sts on left needle from back to front; wrap yarn around right needle and pull through as if to purl; place this new loop onto left needle. 1 purl st cast on.

Insert right needle between first and second sts on left needle from front to back; wrap yarn around right needle and pull through as if to knit; place this new loop onto left needle. 1 knit st cast on; rep from * to until you have the required number of sts (including slip knot).

SLOPED CAST-OFF

Note: Cast off knitwise on RS rows, purlwise on WS rows. Work the first cast-off row as usual. On the row before the next cast-off, work to last st and slip it purlwise.

Next cast-off: Slip 2 sts (knitwise, one at a time, if working on a RS row/purlwise if working on a WS row); pass first slipped st over second slipped st: 1 st cast off; cast off subsequent sts normally.

GERMAN SHORT ROWS

Work to the specified point, turn work. With yarn in front, slip 1 stitch purlwise from left needle to right needle. Pull working yarn over the needle tightly, thus creating a double-stitch (DS), then bring the yarn to the front if the next stitch is a purl stitch, or keep the yarn in the back if the next stitch is a knit stitch. Continue working according to pattern.

Working the DS: When working across a DS, knit or purl its two legs together as one.

PATTERN NOTES

The body is worked in the round from the bottom up. The sleeves are picked up and worked in the round with gathers at the top, middle and bottom. The collar is picked up and worked in brioche stitch.
