It is a truth universally acknowledged, to paraphrase Jane Austen, that a lady should never toot her own horn. But surely one can make the odd exception. For I’d like to use this letter to thank both the wonderful staff here at The Lady – and you, our loyal readers. The Lady, you see, is in rather fi ne fettle. Despite facing particularly turbulent conditions in the magazine market, we are attracting new readers and picking up subscribers. As we approach year’s end, we have also been nominated for three prestigious industry awards. As well as being shortlisted for the British Society of Magazine Editors Editor of the Year gong (women’s weeklies), which we won last year, we are also up for the Editor and Consumer Magazine of the Year titles at the PPA’s Independent Publisher awards. If all goes well, by Christmas, we’re going to need a bigger mantelpiece. Either way, the magazine’s rising fortunes come down to the sterling work of the staff here in Bedford Street and our many passionate readers, who never hesitate to tell me exactly what they think – and how this 129-year institution can become even better.
