Dear Readers, Beady-eyed regulars might have already noticed that we have a new cartoon strip drawn by the hugely talented Kathryn Lamb. Each week we will be following the antics of Social Medea and her husband Social Norm. Will she ever come off Facebook or Twitter? She is the brainchild of our new cartoons editor, the esteemed Richard Ingrams, a man who prides himself on never having switched on a computer, preferring instead the simple things in life. Like a walk across the South Downs. Like so many things, we often take the rolling landscapes that form the backdrop to our beautiful countryside for granted and it can fall to an outsider to remind us how lucky we are. That outsider may well be the American-born writer Bill Bryson who has just undertaken another tour of our glorious island for his latest book. His message? Get out and enjoy it more – and make sure it’s protected. Turning themselves into beautiful creatures is the primary goal of our fi ve podgy pets as they make their follow-up visits to their fi t camp. Will Duke the Labrador have lost any weight? Has Jemma the dachshund cross learnt to live without her Sunday roasties? To take their minds off it, perhaps their owners might like to take them on one of our irresistible winter breaks.
