Top PitchJoyful journey

Please find attached a map that was given to me by the owner of Alpencamp at Kötschach-Mauthen, Austria. An excellent family-run campsite in a lovely area, on the edge of a small town that has not been spoiled by overtourism. Walk into town for coffee and strudel in one of the cafés and the friendly locals will be greeting you with a cheery “Morgen”.

I was discussing the plans for our onward journey and my intentions of trying to avoid the toll roads with my 3,850kg motorhome with a friendly local. He suggested this route, as it is suitable for even the largest motorhomes and is toll-free from the Italian border heading north to Germany. There is a tunnel (Felbertauern) with a fee of €13 (£11.80) if you use that section of the route.

The entire journey was delightful, smooth road surfaces and beautiful scenery, going through a few towns and passing cafés and restaurants with parking for motorhomes. So much nicer than motorway-style roads.

I hope some readers find this useful, I did.

First and foremost, the engine has become much smoother and is now a relaxing drive. The power has shown a great improvement and overtaking lorries uphill has become so much easier and safer. The trip was very similar to the one I took last year where I returned just over 25mpg, this was with my Rapido 886F A-class motorhome loaded to almost its limit of 3,700kg.

This year, I returned 29.9mpg, a saving on fuel of approximately £85. This means that I will have paid for the cost of the unit in a very short time.

On another subject, I had read several letters in MMM about the high cost of caravan and motorhome campsites but really not taken too much notice. However, on this trip, staying at four different campsites, I was amazed at the cost. One campsite charged €22 per night, one €17, one €18 and, finally, one charged €21.

All were for a motorhome plus electric and for two people per night. Each campsite had exceptionally clean toilet blocks, and at least a bar and snack bar and all had swimming pools except one.

On my return to England, I stayed at a Caravan and Motorhome Club site and, although the toilet block was cl
