ERA: Tommy Killick was axed by Poole after 20 years

VICE-CHAIR Andy Rossiter still believes sacking legendary Poole Town manager Tom Killick was the right move – just at the wrong time.

Major shareholder Rossiter has attracted criticism over a torrid campaign that has seen the Dolphins dragged into a battle to stay at Step 3.

Killick was dismissed in early September after more than 19 years in the hotseat, a spell in which he took the club from Step 6 to a National South play-off spot that could not be taken because of ground grading issues.

Poole had made a solid start this time but ex-Crawley Town striker Matt Tubbs was drafted in from Bashley and tasked with prompting a title charge.

Tubbs left having secured just 28 points in 22 games with fortunes dipping further under interim James Ellis who was replaced by ex-Truro boss Steve Tully last week.

Frustration has been exacerbated by Dorset rivals Dorchester Town climbing away from relegation danger, above Poole and into mid-table after Killick landed there in late September.

“If you could bottle hindsight you would make a fortune,” Rossiter, who insistsd there was “no animosity” with Killick, told The NLP.

“Of course there will be the regret that we didn’t allow Tommy to see out his final year, that will always come up but if Matt Tubbs had won everything, without being disrespectful, people would have said ‘Tommy who?’

“There has been a combination of things, 13 matches postponed, loss of momentum and losing becomes a habit. It is not the season we envisaged or planned and I am really thankful for the huge support we have had through thick and thin, knowing that we will get it right.”
