PROLOGUE

ELEANOR was having breakfast when she first heard the news on the wireless. Her tea mug was halfway to her lips when she heard it for the second time, courtesy of Miss Smith, the housekeeper, who almost took the door off its hinges as she barrelled into the kitchen to relate the glad tidings.

She shot across the well-worn tiles, before skidding to a halt next to shiny black stove in its red-brick fireplace.

“Have you heard?” the old lady enquired breathlessly.

Her eyes sparkled, and a smile danced on her lips as she delivered the news they’d been praying and waiting for.

Eleanor stood and threw her arms around Miss Smith and they paused there for some time to let the information sink in.
