GEORGE Skivington insists the future is bright in terms of the talent coming through within the English rugby set-up.

Handed the perfect role to assess the current riches during his week-long stewardship of the England A side for their recent clash with Portugal, the Gloucester head coach was duly impressed by what he saw from those on duty.

“I think English rugby is in a good spot and there are loads of good players coming through,” said Skivington following his side’s 91-5 victory at Mattioli Woods Welford Road. “I’ve been really impressed with their attitude and what they’ve brought during the week.

“It’s very easy to get ahead of yourself and this group, but they came in very humble and keen to learn. It took a few days for some people to come of their shells, but we set the tone, and we built as the week went on. As I said, it was a very impressive group of people, and they have oodles of talent.”

Although a second-string Portugal side failed to provide a creditable threat on the day, Skivington was impressed by what he saw from his youthful squad, many of whom harbour hopes of working their way into Steve Borthwick’s selection plans moving forward.

“We would have liked a tighter game, but I still think the week was outstanding bringing the group together,” added Skivington. “There is massive value in seeing people train and getting out of their comfort zone.

“I’ve no doubt lots of good will spill out to the clubs from the back of this.
