SAM Riley’s late score gave Harlequins their first win in a Champions Cup knockout tie at the seventh time of asking in a thrilling contest at The Stoop.

Quins were cruising at the break as scores from Andre Esterhuizen, Marcus Smith and Cadan Murley replied to Scott Cummings’ early effort.

Glasgow dominated the first half hour of the second half with tries from Johnny Matthews and ever-present George Horne levelling the contest, before Horne’s penalty took Warriors ahead.

But replacement hooker Riley took his chance from the back of a maul on 76 minutes to send Quins into a Champions Cup quarter-final for the first time in 11 years.

“Whenever we’re ahead, we seem to let the opposition in,” said star man Smith. “That’s something we’re working on. We’re still not where we want to be, but we’ve got another European knockout now, which is exciting.

“In the last two years we’ve fallen at this hurdle, so that’s a monkey off the back.”

Glasgow led early on following a superb set of phases, with Cummings claiming the score after Tom Jordan jinked through to within a few metres of the line. But in a first half where they conceded 12 penalties, that was almost all the threat they posed as Quins took charge of the contest.

Two lineout drives rumbled towards the line to no avail, and Murley saw a try ruled out after fumbling the ball in the right corner. r.

But after Will Evans won a turnover and put Quins back into attacking territory, Smith producedd a perfect crossfield kick,k, gleefully collected by Esterhuizen, before converting to level the scores.

Sione Tuipulotu’s return from injury was spoiled as he was sinbinned for flying offside with the line beggingg again for his opposite number Esterhuizen.

At the next set-piece Smith stepped inside before juggling possession diving over, and the flyhalf then set up Murley in the corner in overtime of the first period, slotting both conversions to give Quins a 14-point lead.
