TRAPEZOID QUILT

HAND-QUILTED BEAUTY

BEHIND THE QUILT

“This quilt is made using our handy trapezoid template. It is an ideal project for scrappy sewing with the added beauty of blank panels to fill with quilting or maybe add a feature fabric. The idea of it began with a student at one of my classes and a pile of leftovers from a Jelly Roll project. Alison is a beautiful hand-quilter and we thought that the strips of background fabric would be perfect for some traditional quilting designs but, like me, in the end she chose to have her quilt long-arm quilted.

“Mairi, from Lismore Quilting used feathers and cables to create a gorgeous traditional style to add to that North Country quilt feel, but this is definitely a quilt I would make again. It is super quick to piece and would make a wonderful winter hand-quilting project!” – Paula Hope

You will need

■ Various prints – Twenty-three (23) 2½in x 42in strips or two-hundred-and-twenty-four (224) 2½in x 5½in rectangles

■ Background fabric (white) – 3¾yds

■ Border and binding fabric – 2⅔yds

■ Batting – 86in x 96in

■ Backing fabric – 5½yds

■ Trapezoid template

Finished Quilt

■ 78in x 90in approx

Cutting out

1 From the various prints, using the trapezoid template, cut ten (10) trapezoids per printed strip, two-hundred-and-thirty (230) trapezoids in total. You will need two-hundred-and-twenty-four (224) trapezoids for the project (Fig 1).

2 From the background fabric, cut four (4) 2½in x WOF strips and subcut into twenty-four (24) 2½in x 3½in pieces and eight (8) 2½in x 6½in pieces.

3 Next take the background fabric and, with the fabric folded as it comes off the bolt, measure 46½in along the length. Cut this piece off and open it out. Refold this piece of fabric, WS together with the selvedges at either side. The piece should be approx. 23¼in x 42in. Trim off one (1) selvedge and then cut six (6) 6½in x 46½in strips.

4 Take the remaining background fabric and, with the fabric folded as it comes off the bolt, measure 66½in along the length. Cut this piece off and open out. Refold the fabric, WS together with the selvedges at either side. The piece should be approx. 33¼in x 42in. Trim off one (1) selvedge and then cut the following:

■ One (1) 6½in x 66½in length, trim to 6½in x 46½in, matching the strips in step 3, making seven (7) 6½in x 46½in strips in total.

■ Four (4) 6½in x 66in lengths.
