■ Backing – 4yds

■ Batting – 70in square

■ Binding – ⅞yd, this is a wider binding than usual, but it gives a nice cross between a border and binding

Notions

■ Template plastic

■ Templates A/AR and B/BR

■ Propelling pencil for fabric (to draw on the WS of fabric)

■ For hand stitching: needles – sharps no. 10, 28wt cotton thread, fabric scissors

Finished size

■ Quilt size: 60½in square with normal binding, 61½in square with wide binding

■ Block size: 10in square

Notes

■ Read all instructions before you start.

■ *You can subcut your scraps or leave the strips in one (1) piece and draw the templates on the strips – do whichever works best for you.

■ Templates are given as A/AR and B/BR. Templates A and B are the templates placed RS up on the WS of the fabric. Templates AR and BR are the templates placed WS up, i.e. reversed, on the WS of the fabric.

■ Figs 24-30 show images of a wide binding used on a separate sample by Carolyn.

■ WOF = width of fabric. Assume a WOF of 42in.

■ WS = wrong side(s).

■ RS = right side(s).

■ SA = seam allowance.

Cutting out 1 From your print fabric scraps* and using template A/AR, cut seventy-two (72) A shapes and seventy-two (72) AR shapes. Each shape can be cut from 4¾in x 5¾in scraps of fabric or twenty-four (24) 4¾in x WOF strips subcut into six (6) 4¾in x 5¾in pieces. 2 From the background fabric* and using template B/BR, cut seventy-two (72) B shapes and seventy-two (72) BR shapes. Each shape can be cut from 3½in x 4¾in scraps of fabric or eighteen (18) 3½in x WOF strips subcut into six (6) 3½in x 4¾in pieces per strip (Fig 1). 3 From the backing fabric, cut two (2) equal lengths and remove the selvedge before joining with a ½in seam allowance. Press the seam open. 4 From the binding fabric, cut seven (7) 4½in x WOF strips. Join with bias joins, removing the selvedge and pressing the seams open. Press in half along the length, WS together.
