CATHEDRAL WINDOW VARIATION

Designed and made by LYNNE EDWARDS MBE

The Creative Curves Quilt

Linking the blocks

This block includes a centre area that has appeared before in previous Blocks of the Month and also features a repeat of the corner rolled-back edges that were in the fourth block in the series. As each block is added, more little details reappear here and there, linking the individual designs into an overall collection that will become the final quilt.

Every design has a finished size of 12in x 12in and is then edged with an extra frame of background fabric in a finished width of 1½in. This acts as a final border to each block and extends the block size to 15in x 15in. The frame includes a cornerstone square that repeats the corner square of each block.

Choosing the fabrics

The centre Cathedral Window effect uses a curved square of background fabric surrounded by four (4) corners of a dark fabric (fabric A), making a strong contrast. Lynne used one (1) of the dark range from Janet Clare’s Collage Collection (Ink 16950 16). Lynne chose the slightly patterned background for this centre and the plainer background fabric for the outer squares of the design.

The same dark fabric that makes the centre corners (fabric A) appears again as part of a team of three (3) fabrics used in strips together to make a stepped fan forming a quarter of the block. The two (2) other strips (fabrics B and C) are made from two (2) different fabrics from the medium green/blue range (Sky 16950 14 and Sky 16957 15). Lynne tried to grade the strength of the strips, with the strongest (the dark fabric) as the longest strip at the centre and the other strips decreasing in strength. The fan unit is repeated four (4) times and placed around the central unit to create the main design.

The layout of background squares and rolled-back edges in all four (4) corners echoes Block 4 and uses another fabric from the Ink range (Ink 16954 20), as fabric D for the curved squares, together with the usual cornerstone square.

Cutting instructions

1 From fabric A (dark fabric) used in the centre and for the longest strips, cut four (4) 2in x 5in strips and four (4) 2in x 2in squares.

2 From fabric B (Sky print) used in the middle strip of each fan, cut four (4) 2in x 5in strips.

3 From fabric C (Sky check) used as the shortest strip in each fan, cut four (4) 2in x 3½in strips.

4 From fabric D (dark ink) used for the curved squares in the corners o
