You will need

■ Print fabric – Twenty-one (21) fat eighths

■ Cream fabric (chick) – One (1) 6in square approx.

■ Red fabric – (coop flag) – One (1) 7in square approx.

■ Background fabric – 2½yds

■ Border fabric – ⅞yd

■ Backing fabric – 3¾yds

■ Batting – 66in x 78in

■ Binding fabric – ⅔yd

Finished size

■ Quilt: 58in x 70in

■ Hen Blocks: 10in square

Notes

■ Please read through the pattern before you begin.

■ Choose prints with plenty of contrast in both the colour and scale of the prints to add interest to your chicken blocks. And don’t forget a dash of yellow for their beaks! Nicola used the binding fabric for the hens’ beaks and the chick’s wing and beak (see step 9).

■ Assume a ¼in seam allowance.

■ WOF = width of fabric. Assume a width of 42in.

■ HST = half-square triangle(s).

Cutting out

1 Choose eighteen (18) fat eighths for the hen blocks and cut each fat eighth as shown in Fig 1A and as described below (Note: the pieces will be mixed and matched amongst the blocks):

■ One (1) 4½in x 8½in piece.

■ One (1) 5½in x 4½in piece.

■ One (1) 5½in x 2½in piece.

■ Three (3) 2½in squares.

■ One (1) 3in square.

■ One (1) 1½in square.

2 Choose one (1) fat eighth for the coop and cut as shown in Fig 1B and as follows:

■ Two (2) 5½in x 6½in squares.

■ One (1) 2in x 8½in strip.

■ Two (2) 2in x 4½in strips.

3 Choose one (1) fat eighth for the coop sides/gable and cut as shown in Fig 1C and as follows:

■ Two (2) 4½in squares.

■ One (1) 2in x 8½in strip.

■ Two (2) 2in x 5½in strips.

4 Choose one (1) dark fat eighth for the coop interior and cut as shown in Fig 1D and as follows:

■ One (1) 2½in x 5½in strip.

■ One (1) 3½in square.
