You will need

■ Fabric A (Sky fabric) – One (1) 3½in square

■ Fabric B (Dark fabric) – One (1) 2in x WOF strip

■ Light fabric C (BKG 1) – One (1) 2in x WOF strip

■ Fabric D (Sky fabric) – One (1) 3½in x WOF strip

■ Fabric E (BKG 2) – One (1) 3½in x WOF strip

■ Fabric F (Dark print) – One (1) 2in x WOF strip

Finished size

■ Block: 12in x 12in

■ Block including the border frame: 15in x 15in

Notes

■ Every design has a finished size of 12in x 12in and is then edged with an extra frame of background fabric in a finished width of 1½in. This acts as a final border to each block and extends the block size to 15in x 15in. The frame includes a cornerstone square that repeats the corner square of each block.

■ All seam allowances are ¼in unless stated otherwise.

■ Keep any off-cuts of fabric for future blocks.

■ RS = right side(s).

■ WS = wrong side(s).

■ BKG = background.

■ WOF = width of fabric.

■ Assume a width of fabric of approx. 42in.

■ WOFQ = width of fat quarter.

■ Assume a width of fat quarter of approx. 21in.

Choosing the fabrics

Block Layout

The design starts in the centre with a square on point in a medium Sky fabric (16954 15), surrounded by a dark frame (16950 16) and then a light frame (16953 11). Beyond this, the scale changes into larger pieces of a medium fabric (16950 14), then the patterned background. The corners have little curved triangles of the darkest fabric (16954 20) before the outer area of the plainer background and the cornerstone square as usual.

Cutting instructions

1 From fabric A (medium fabric), used for the centre Cathedral Window-style unit, cut one (1) 3½in square.

2 From fabric B (dark fabric), used for the centre dark frame, cut four (4) 2in squares and four (4) 2in x 3½in rectangles.

3 From light fabric C (BKG 1), used for the light-coloured frame, cut twelve (12) 2in squares.

4 From fabric D (medium sky fabric), cut eight (8) 3½in squares and four (4) 2in squares.

5 From fabric E (BKG 2), cut eight (8) 3½in and four (4) 2in squares.

6 From fabric F (dark print), used in the corners of the block, cut twelve (12) 2in squares.
