DEFINING FILMS

The movies that terrify, tickle and trigger tears for Adam Buxton.

THE FIRST MOVIE I EVER SAW

One of my earliest cinema memories is The Rescuers. It’s about mice from all over the world forming a UN-like organisation called the Rescue Aid Society that helps people who have been abducted. One member is a hot mouse called Miss Bianca who has white fur and is voiced by Eva Gabor. The only bad thing was the songs. We always had the Disney’s Greatest Hits cassette on in the car and [my sister and I] would sing along to all the bangers. The Rescuers songs were pretty shit. Although, the Rescue Aid Society theme was quite good.

It had amazing visuals and, conceptually, I liked that I was seeing a film about AI with a slightly different take on it from pretty much everything everyone was saying after ChatGPT came out, which was, ‘Oh, we’re fucked.’ It was nice seeing The Creator and thinking, ‘Maybe there’s more to it than that.’

THE FILM THAT SCARES ME MOST

Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin. Scarlett Johansson plays this beautiful alien woman who roams Scotland picking up men, harvesting their essence and sending it back home. It’s the most nightmarish thing I’ve ever seen.

THE FILM THAT A LWAYS MAKES ME LAUGH

Galaxy Quest. It’s perfect for me because I love that whole genre. Tim Allen’s great, Sam Rockwell’s brilliant, Alan Rickman’s amazing, and as someone who’s obsessed with Alien, it was so good having Sigo
