For runners looking for excitement, a challenge that really means something and just plain old fun, well then ultra-running is your next point of call. And better, you won’t be alone. This element of our sport is growing at an unbelievable rate, far outstripping marathons and it’s why experts like Montane are stepping up their involvement. We need advice, inspiration, and some pretty decent kit to get us on that long path.

Of course, at this point perhaps the more cynical amongst us will recall the old-fashioned days where ultra-runners were very much regarded as eccentric. At this point feel free to insert your own stereotypes – sandal-wearing, bearded types who shunned publicity and big crowds? Well, that is not the case today! Now, we’re all about normal runners – you and I will fall into that category – who are excited to challenge ourselves in a very different way. And it’s not just runners. Other sports recognise the incredible sense of achievement (not to mention the fitness) ultra-running provides and are turning to it in their drives. Sabrina Verjee – we’ve all heard of her – is a great example as she has moved on from modern pentathlon to conquering some of the toughest ultra-distance trails on the planet.
