#RUN 1000 MILES

TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

The finish line is in sight, but how close are you reaching your 1000 miles target? Some of you got there a while ago, while some are cutting it fine. Here’s how to get through the final two months...

1 Plan a race. The colder weather and nights drawing in often don’t make running seem very inviting. Picking a target that will give another reason for your running will spur you on to the finish line.

2 Light your way. Running in the dark doesn’t have to rule out trail running. With a headtorch such as one from #Run1000Miles partner Silva, you can get off-road well into the evening or be seen better on the roads.

3 Get the right kit. It may be getting colder, but with the right clothing this should be no excuse. Layer up if it’s really cold. Check out Montane and sportsshoes.com for the best cold-weather kit. Besides, the optimum temperature for running is actually around 7°C so, for many of us, November is the perfect month. And, with the energy prices as they are, you also get to keep warm for free!

4 Embrace the mud. If the trails near you are getting muddy, see it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. The heavy going is great for strength and conditioning, plus you’ll probably be surprised how much you like it once you get over the fact that you’re not going to keep your kit clean. Get shoes with the right grip for mud, such as the La Sportiva Mutant.

5 Find new routes. Rejuvenate your running by seeking out new routes on the OS Maps app.

6 Don’t fret if you miss the 1000- mile target. It’s very much the taking part that counts. If you’ve run more than usual this year, you’re now already fitter, healthier and happier.
