HAMISH FROST

What is a mid layer? In basic terms, it’s the middle garment of the classic 3-layer system. It’s worn over a fast-wicking base layer, yet underneath your outer layer waterproof jacket, and is the layer designed to provide insulating warmth. Sounds simple enough, right?

Sadly, however, that’s where the clarity ends. In modern times the mid layer has become a rather elusive and nebulous clothing concept. Gone are the days when there was just one simple option for a mid layer – the bog standard Polartec fleece. Now brands have a myriad of complex, high-tech options, featuring hybrid designs and futuristic fabrics. Some combine fleece with ‘body mapped’ panels of synthetic sheet insulation or down-filled baffles; others use new-fangled 21st century versions of fleece such as the chequered squares of gridded fleece or Polartec Alpha Direct’s fluffy, super-breathable mesh tufts. Others stick to the traditional fleecy options, including polar fleece, micro-fleece (lightweight and tightly-woven) and high-loft fleece (super-fluffy and warm).

The sheer number of different fleecy options, as well as hybrid cross-breeds, means not all mid layers are built equal. This only adds to the confusion. Some are thick, heavy and toasty, and suitable for winter. Others are light, minimalist and super-breathable with low bulk, designed for high-energy activities in milder climes. Some cost over £200, using cutting-edge materials and designs, while others are made from basic fleece fabrics and set you back less than £100.

Which is right for you? It all depends on many factors – your body, the weather, the intensity of exercise and your budget. If you run hot, sweat loads and tend to hike fast, you’ll obviously need a different mid layer than a slow plodder who feels the cold badly. Personal preference plays a part too. Some hillwalkers favour a thicker mid layer worn like a standalone outer all day long; others prefer a minimalist mid layer but will throw on an insulated jacket for added warmth when needed.

Whatever your preference, a good mid layer will provide a nice balance between core warmth, freedom of movement, comfort and breathability. In this round-up we’ve focused exclusively on high-tech fleecy options, ignoring any hybrid jackets with down insulation. Turn the page for six of the best...
