ROOM WITH A VIEW

Set on its own white sandy beach in the north-west of Scotland, and 2½ hours walk from anywhere, book this bothy all to yourself for a small (not-for-profit) fee. The building was once a school mistress’s house in a thriving township of 50 people. Accommodation has room for 6, there’s no bathroom, you’ll collect water from the stream, and you’ll have to take everything in and out with you, but you’ll have a little slice of paradise all to yourself.

BEAVERS ABOUT!

We’re very excited to learn that there are imminent plans for the release of up to six beaver families in the Cairngorms National Park. Work has been ongoing since 2009 to reintroduce beavers, which were once native to Britain. Hunted to extinction in the 16th century, they played an important part in the ecosystem, helping to create wetlands that benefit other wildlife, absorb carbon dioxide, purify water and reduce flooding.
