Iona Pawson MCI, Plas y Brenin. instagram: @outdoors_with_iona Fuelling a winter day starts the night before, having a decent well-balanced tea to replenish my energy reserves. Personally I like a hot breakfast, with plenty of fluids like orange juice and coffee. During the day I enjoy eating cheese and strawberry jam sandwiches, homemade cake, and things which don’t freeze and you can eat with gloves on. I like peanuts and dried fruit, but you have to be careful that they don’t blow away as you try to eat them! In my winter rucksack I’ll normally pack a 500ml flask of hot squash and a 500ml water bottle.
Will Nicholls WMCI, Lead MCI at Plas y Brenin. pyb.co.uk I try to drink plenty the night before and in the morning, so I start the day well hydrated. A flask of hot blackcurrant is hard to beat for me, and I’ll always drink it, whereas the thought of cold water in a bottle is never as appealing. Foodwise, I’m quite keen on a big breakfast, then snacks that can just stay in my pocket for the hill; dried fruit and nuts and flapjack are my go-to at the moment.

Kenton Cool IFMGA Mountain Guide and 17-time Everest summiteer. kentoncool.com I like to take a hot drink for those chilly stops, a juice of some type in a flask. Foodwise I’m a big fan of a good wholesome sandwich as I’ve always found that real food increases general morale. Or if I’m feeling super indulgent a wide-topped flask with homemade soup. I often supplement this with a trail mix that I’ve made for on-the-go.
