This is a weird one. A surreal, Gothic tale set on a Lake District campsite at the end of summer. The tourists have left and one camper remains, preparing for a trip to India. When the owner of the campsite asks him to help with some low-season tasks, he happily obliges and then, without much else pressing to do, gets drawn into staying on.

Once, Haweswater was a natural lake bordered by the small farming villages of Measand and Mardale Green. Then, in the 1930s, in order to provide drinking water for Manchester, the valley was flooded and the villages demolished. This historical novel is set at the lake at this time, following a spokesman for the waterworks company and local woman in their relationships with each other and the place.
