BURNFOOT saw catches fall in September, but prior to this Sean Cooke caught a 7lb salmon in Wilkies. The following day saw Dave Simpson catch two salmon and Chris Lawrence landed one. Both were caught in a clearing water. On August 28, Brian Joly caught a salmon at the Mound while Neil Beaumont had one at the Boxes. Chris Wotherspoon released a salmon caught in Wilkies. The Boxes produced three salmon on August 29 for Richie Murchinson who landed a big salmon, while Alan Pellow returned two salmon.

Early September saw overcast conditions and a clearing river. Paul Bowes caught three salmon and Michael Richardson two – these ranged from 4-14lb.

Almost two weeks into September a couple of grilse were caught, followed by a salmon caught by Mike Mark in Wilkies. Since then the river has had more water after heavy rainfall.

Buccleuch bailiff Peter Kinstrey told me sport on estate waters had quietened, despite decent conditions.

On the Willow Pool, Nigel Graham caught an 18lb salmon on fly. Fishing in a higher water, John Barry caught a 20-pounder on the worm.

On Gilnockie Tower beat, regular Esk rod Nick Wilcox caught a 4lb sea-trout at Shortsholm.

At Mid Irvine House, David Pick caught a 4lb sea-trout fishing the Boat Pool.

As I write, the river is fairly settled above Langholm but in spate in the Canonbie area and below, with water coming in from the Liddle. This water should encourage fish to run. On the Esk and Liddel Angling Club waters (BELAC), the flood in the last few days of August saw anglers out on the river. Tommy Callaghan released a high teens salmon and other fish were reported hooked and lost. Dry sunny weather for much of early September brought fishing to a standstill, then heavy rainfall brought another big flood. Dave Beattie was in the right place at the right time catching a 7lb salmon and also seven sea-trout in just of few hours. He was spinning in the Dead Neuk. The Esk was on the rise again on September 15. Fish were pushing upstream but the big autumn runs are now a distant memory! It has been a very difficult season on the BELAC beats this year for unknown reasons and rods will be praying for a bumper end to the season.

Colin Painter caught a 14lb salmon on the Tyneside Angler's syndicate beat at Longwood. The fish took an Orange Shrimp Fly. He also released a 3lb sea-trout caught on the same fly in the Lower Sowie. He released two sea-trout a few days earlier in the Skipper’s Bridge Pool while spinning. Jason Brockley also caught several sea-trout to 3lb on spinner from the same pool.
