New GLC is bigger than the previous-generation car

YOU COULD THINK of the new Mercedes-Benz GLC as the breakfast buffet of the large SUV market – offering something to appeal to almost everyone.

There’s a coupé model for those who want style, AMG versions if you’re looking for something sporty, and three new plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) for drivers attracted to the halfway house between a conventional car and an electric one.

All the PHEVs combine a 134bhp electric motor with a 2.0-litre engine.The 300e and 400e have petrol engines and outputs of 308bhp and 375bhp respectively, while the diesel 300de has 329bhp.They get a bigger battery than the outgoing GLC PHEVs (24.3kWh versus 13.5kWh), which has increased the electric-only range from 30 miles to up to 75 miles (more than the equivalent BMW X3 can officially manage).

There are also two 2.0-litre petrol engines – the 201bhp 200 and the 255bhp 300 – and a 194bhp diesel, badged 220d. All three have mild hybrid technology.
